Southern California/Orange County CIO Breakfast Round Table

March 12, 2015 meeting

At the November meeting, we had an active discussion about the OC CIO Round Table.

We agreed to modify the frequency of the meetings to one every other month.  The next meeting will be on May 14 at 7:00 – 9:00 a.m. CIOs can invite their “rising stars” (a member of their group with the most promise) to one meeting a year.

Topic:          Gartner Group’s presentation on BYOD

John Girard of the Gartner Group made a presentation about a year ago on BYOD.

Jon Hahn thought that his insight on BYOD would be interesting to the group:

 

Today, most (80%?) mobile professionals use 2 or more devices – by 2018 most will conduct all their work on personal smart devices, even if BYOD complicates compliance.  Companies have different approaches to BYOD, from none allowed to a wide range of devices are permitted.  How to manage the diversity is the challenge – see Slide 4.  The mobile police framework is nicely captured on Slide 5.  Of course, who you are and what your function is determines what kind of device is most suitable.

Not all devices are equal, and policies need to be developed to regulate mobility.  Different companies provide a variety of economic incentives to better control usage.

Slides 10-14 describe the variety of policy choices – well worth reading.

The recommendations are listed on Slide 15:

-         Establish polices for all key user departments

          -         Don’t treat all users the same way

          -         Use boundaries set in polices to create a tiered support structure

          -         Tool up! Select mobile defenses.

January 8, 2015 meeting

Present:        Keith Golden, William Zauner, Susan Howington, Devin Hornick, Joe Desuta, David Mann, Sean Brown, Esther Delurgio, Jon Grunzweig, Rich Hoffman, Joel Manfredo, Dave Goff, Subbu Murthy, Dave Phillips

At the last meeting, we had an active discussion about the OC CIO Round Table. The attendance at this one was a healthy 14, which is good. We agreed to modify the frequency of the meetings to one every other month.  The next meeting will be on March 12 at 7:00 – 9:00 a.m. CIOs can invite their “rising stars” (a member of their group with the most promise) to one meeting a year.

Topic:          Self Promotion and Career Development

William Zauner and Keith Golden invited Susan Howington, Power Connections, and Devin Hornick, KORE 1, to share their ideas with the group. 

Susan has presented to the group in the past.   She challenged the members to define their reputation – both with people you know and digitally, with people you don’t know.  Her message is that you need your own unique brand - your character, attitude and persona.  Her presentation (see attached) included several slides to help you get started on developing your brand.

Devin focused on the projected hiring explosion in 2015, and how to attract and/or retain the talent that you are searching for, or want to retain – by being flexible.  Companies will use mobile and social media to attract talent.  The hottest skills include anything Cloud, and SAP and Microsoft tools experience.  He listed some of the clients. Don’t loose touch with the salary ranges, and the differences.  His slides include lots of ideas, including paying for education, flexible work options and schedules.

This was a very interactive session and many different ideas and approaches were shared.
